Claymakers Arts Community

Claymakers Arts Community, Inc., is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization located in Durham, North Carolina, dedicated to nurturing a thriving ceramics community by connecting people through education, resources, and support. Since its founding in 2000, Claymakers has been a cornerstone of the Triangle’s ceramic community, offering education, supplies, services, and studio space. Our high-quality programs have provided a creative outlet for thousands in Durham and beyond.

Through our supply store, each year we equip over 1,000 local students, artists, schools, and organizations with the clay, glazes, tools, and glaze chemicals they need to create ceramic art. Our knowledgeable staff offers expert guidance and troubleshooting.

At the heart of our mission are our 6- and 7-week adult classes, which provide high-quality instruction in wheel throwing, sculpture, and handbuilding. Our diverse courses, ranging from beginner wheel classes to advanced firing techniques, serve over 1,000 students annually. For advanced students and independent artists, we offer affordable private studio space. We also provide economical firing services for community members who do not own a kiln.

We’re especially proud of our studio assistant program, which trains students in studio management and supports their growth as independent artists. Over the past twenty years, this program has nurtured nearly a dozen professional ceramicists known locally and regionally. Currently, 9 studio assistants gain hands-on experience while benefitting from studio access and classes.

Our newest initiative, the Community Clay Scholarship program, aims to provide equitable access to ceramic education by reducing financial barriers for Durham residents who identify as BIPOC or LGBTQIA+.
